Week In Review: August 14, 2020
Here is all the best in U2 news:
Two New U2 Covers
We have two new covers to report on this week. Jon Blistein of Rolling Stones brings us news that The Late Show With Stephen Colbert band leader and jazz pianist, Jon Batiste, enlisted producer Butch Vig to cover “Sunday Bloody Sunday.” This was in response to his longtime collaborator, Deon Jones, sustaining a serious injury at a peaceful protest in LA. In addition to covering the song, they also created a video– see it all here.
It’s not every day that Metal Injection discusses U2. When Anthrax’s drummer, Charlie Benante, and its bassist, Frank Bello, team up with Death Angel’s singer, Mark Osegueda, to cover a U2 song, it’s definitely worth a mention. The group covered “City Of Blinding Lights.” Read about Benante’s long history as a U2 fan and excitement signing on to Island Records and watch the video of the group playing the cover, here.
Bono’s Handwritten Lyrics Are Up For Auction
Bono is doing even more for the music community after recent news of U2’s $1,500,000 donation to provide relief for the live music industry, as we reported on July 31. MusiCares has announced a charity auction with donated memorabilia from many well-known artists, including Bono’s handwritten lyrics to “Love Is Bigger Than Anything In Its Way.” The lot is estimated to sell for $2,000-$3,000. There is another lot up for auction with a U2 connection: a painting by Chrissie Hynde of Brian Eno is expected to go for $6,000-$8,000. Read more here and bid at Juilen’s Auctions.
U2 X-Radio© News Round Up
There were a few notable appearances on U2 X-Radio© recently. The Edge showed up on the August 2 episode of “Elevation” and spoke to Roman Krznaric with host John Kelly. On August 9’s episode of “Elevation,” he spoke about John Hume’s recent passing.
Caitlin “Cait” O’Riordan, former bassist for The Pogues and The Radiators, debuted a new weekly show called “The Rocky O’Riordan Show” on August 4. Adam introduced the episode and O’Riordan mentioned how Adam was her inspiration for becoming a bassist after meeting him at an album signing.
Gavin Friday is debuting a new monthly show on August 14, “Gavin Friday Presents,” featuring a tribute to Hal Willner, a longtime friend and collaborator who passed away earlier this year. Willner was working with U2 on a cover of “Bang A Gong (Get It On),” one song on an unreleased tribute album to Marc Bolan and T. Rex.
