In Memory Of Aaron Govern

By now you’ve probably heard that the U2 community recently lost one of its most prominent and beloved members. On Tuesday, April 28, 2020, our dear friend and colleague Aaron Govern passed away after a long battle with cancer. We are, of course, devastated. Aaron was a familiar face in our community, one of those people we all knew in some way. There’s quite a lot to say about his life and what he meant to everyone. However, despite his visibility and outgoing nature, Aaron was an intensely private person. So we will just say this: he will be missed by everyone.

This is a time to celebrate Aaron’s contributions to the U2 community. His work on early U2 setlists and concert venues was an unparalleled service to fans. His interview with Neil McCormick last year was a unique insight into McCormick’s debut novel. Most recently, Aaron’s dive into the history of U2’s first-ever release enlightened innumerable fans with its depth. We are lucky that he was so willing to share his encyclopedic knowledge with us, and in that way, he will always be with us.

The Govern family has set up a website for all to share messages and remember Aaron: http://aarongovern.muchloved.com. If you’d like to make a donation in his memory, see the link on that site for Myton Hospice. We encourage you to visit that page to share your thoughts and condolences with the Govern family.

On a personal note, I think Aaron would be most happy to know we were enjoying U2 and appreciating the knowledge he shared. So maybe after reading through an article or two today, put on a U2 album and enjoy it. It’s what he would have wanted.
