End of an era for iconic towers in U2’s ‘Pride’ video

The Irish Independent reports that the twin chimneys of the ESB oil burning plant in Dublin puffed smoke for the last time yesterday after almost 40 years in operation. They are the second tallest chimneys in Ireland.

The towers were featured in U2’s “Pride (In The Name Of Love)” video as well as the advertisement for the Bank of Ireland’s sponsorship of the GAA football championship and postcards of the capital city.

In 2008, there was an appeal to have the twin chimneys included in the Record of Protected Structures. That attempt failed. The fate of the towers remains unknown at this time.
